North Island Bike Tour PT 1

Last year Paul and I did a Motorcycle tour of the South Island, and I kept a daily blog..sort of. I am getting lazy, so this time it will be when I get round to it. We left Whangarei on Wednesday morning bright and early, our course set for Raglan. We had lunch in Huntly beside the river and arrived in Raglan at about 2ish. The accommodation we booked was called "Solscape" an Eco-friendly backpackers/lodge. We booked a Caboose to stay in, we had thought about staying in an Earth Dome, but it was not available. They were not roomy, and with no insulation, hot during the day and cold at night.

It was a very interesting place, with Tipi's, railway wagons, and earth huts to stay in, but it was pretty back to nature-ish.
We left on Thursday and headed to Te-awamutu to catch up with my Cousins for a coffee, thanks Joy and Linda. We then headed to New Plymouth, and yes we got rained on, but hey that's all part of the fun. The ride through the King Country was beautiful, I can see now why my Dad had a soft spot for the area. The rugged hills and gorges, green valleys and as you get to the Taranaki area the beautiful swathes of farmland. We spent the night in a Cabin right beside the sea near the Port. We left in the rain this morning and headed around the Stratford side of Mt Egmont/Taranaki. It was absolutely beautiful countryside, rolling green and flat with quaint little towns, very settled. All of it was shrouded in a misty drizzly rain. In fact Paul and I both believe Mt Egmont is a myth, as we did not see it at all, it was shrouded in the mists. We have at last made it to the refuge of Jason and Tash's place in Wanganui, and would you believe the rain stopped just before we got here, and it had been fine ever since.
