North Island tour Pt 2

Paul and I spent a lovely 2 days in Wanganui/Whanganui, visiting our Son and Daughter-inlaw. We are always surprised by how lovely Wanganui is. It has garnered quite a bad reputation for gang related crime etc, but it is a lovely river city, with beautiful old buildings and picturesque parks.
We left Wanganui on Sunday morning heading for Castlepoint on the East Coast of the lower North Island, but you know about the best laid plans of mice and men. We stopped at a little town called Sanson and visited the best antiques shop I have seen for awhile, we then stopped at Ashurst and admired the Manawatu Windfarm. I have decided that I do like a good wind turbine, they make great landscape sculptures on the hills. It was at Ashurst that we decided to give Castlepoint a miss and head for Napier, we will get there another day. So on to Napier we went, being passed by quite a number of Harley Davidson wielding bikies, yes, we go at the speed limit and when it rains Paul becomes even more cautious, you have to remember He is carrying the most precious of cargo......Me.
On arriving in Napier we headed for Marine Parade, the hub of the accommodation by the looks, we managed to get into the YHA hostel, right on Marine Parade, near the city center. It was a lovely spot with great views and lovely walks along the esplanade. We got in touch with some old friends of ours and cadged some dinner off them, we had a neat time catching up after 15 years.
This morning we were up bright and early for a walk around the city, then breakfast overlooking Marine Parade. We saddled up and set off for Gisbourne, stopping for a pot of tea in Wairoa and arriving in Gisbourne for lunch. We have settled into the YHA and headed out for a walk around the inner harbour and town centre, finding a Cidery on the way and having a few tastings.
Just as an aside, a bird flew over and shat on my keyboard, is that a sign of good luck, or was it good luck that it didn't get me. Tomorrow we are off around Eastcape, will bring you an update later.
Manawatu Wind Farm.

Me and Pania, best mates.
