Headliner Revamp pt 1.

Well we have removed the headliner under the deck over the forward berth. We have problems with it in colder weather with condensation, and being wood once it is wet in the winter it never dries properly until summer rolls around again. The main cause, of course is lack of insulation, so we have decided to remedy the problem and replace the teak with a white liner to lighten up the very dark area forward. As you can see from the before photo, the wood was very water stained from previous salt water leaks through the caprails and chain locker. We have addressed some of these issues (fingers crossed).

Once the headlining was removed Paul decided he wanted to infill the hundreds of screw holes with some epoxy, just to make things tickyboo. Well after countersinking all of the holes first to make them easier to fill, he was having second thoughts. But we soldiered on and completed the job with a few slumps of the epoxy, and a few bubbles. This may have been an unnecessary step, but we both hate having holes in the boat if we don't need them.

We then proceeded to cut templates of the area, this caused a bit of frustration and cursing but we managed it without a divorce. So this weekend has been a shuttle between our house, where we are cutting out the headliner, and Kabuki where we try it on to check the fit (luckily we live very close by). We are using shower liner for the headliner, as it is easy to clean and a lovely bright gloss white. Paul is able to cut it with tin snips and the jigsaw, but the jigsaw does give a rougher edge.

We are covering the liner with 8mm insulation foam and then screwing to the ceiling with minimal screws, as we know they will drip condensation, so the fewer the better. Next weekend we hope to get it up, it will be good to see it finished.

Cheers for now.
